The theory between a Visitor and a Resident shows how a person displays their persona on the web. The visitor is someone who “leaves no trace”, while the resident is “someone who lives online”. I think this theory is well defined and is shown well in this video. It seems, as people began to work on the Internet they become either a visitor or resident. With the advancement in technology people sometime develop different levels of being a visitor or a resident. Its all about that persons motivation. As Dave White mentions, “It’s not about academic or technical skills it’s about culture and motivation”, why people are getting online and what they are looking to receive.
White also talks about what the visitor does while on the web. He says, “The visitor sees the web as a collection of tools” they get on and use what they need and when they are finished they put it back. While “The resident see the web…as a social space” and they belong to what is happening. According to the video there are four distinct roles that a person plays while on the web. People are either to the right as a resident, to the left as a visitor, up as institutional, or down as a non-intuitional. What institutional is referring to is professional, while non-institutional is referring to personal use.
I would say as an individual, I am out there on the web and would consider myself a resident. As a professional, I do use the web more as a toolbox, like the visitor is explained. I feel that as I grow as a professional, I will start to contribute more to the professional side of this continuum. It is hard to be a resident as a student, I don’t feel as though I am an expert in my field and require more growth before I can contribute to the community.
