Ahhh…… Finally!! After all of these reflections I get to talk about something that I hold dear, which is physical education. This is a Ted Talks video which is discussing how physical education is being reinvented. Glover opened up with the video talking about statistics and facts with the obesity rate in the youth of our nation. We as a society know this has been an ever growing problem within our society and physical education could be an outlet to help with it. Glover stated, “I was inspired as a child to get excited about doing things like this[juggling] so that they stay a part of my life as I get older and the way you do that is through education.” It is very important as an educator to not only show students how to do an activity but to show them how to have fun with it. Some improvement in Physical education that Glover talks about is getting rid of static stretching and incorporating dynamic stretching. The old sit and reach test can be used with cheap modern technology which helps assess flexibility. Many modern classrooms focus on core strengthen and training. Classrooms can use treadmills for running in different ways. New video games like Dance, Dance, Revolution are a great way to gain excitement. Introducing new skills like the rower, require simple step to be explained and taught before they released to work on their own.
Glover showed a video from his mentor’s classroom in 1991 that developed a program based on individual achievement over team sports. This goes into showing where Glover is at now. In his classroom every child wears a downloadable heart rate monitors. I thought about having my classes use heart rate monitors during physical education. The problem with it out our level is the funding and the amount of supplies we have. Decent heart rate monitors are expensive. For a school of 1,000 students it could cost up to $100,000 for each and every student to have one. Even if we tried to do cycles have a third of the school use them it would still cost to the upwards of $33,000. The problem with have just a classroom set is having students clean the device from one period to the next. There is skin contact on the device requires the device to become wet when cleaned. I am not saying it’s not doable but I don’t think funding is in place for a huge project like this at least not at our current level.
