Thom Markham starts the article, Redefining Teachers with a 21st Century Education ‘Story’, by first writing about education and how it doesn’t describe schools in the U.S. He goes on to talk about some history of education and how we are in a constant cycle of teaching of hands-on, better citizenship, student oriented and scientific, strict outcomes, measurable results to children learning. We are at a time that what we teach and what we bring to the table will affect the future of country for a long time to come. As Markham writes, “Your passion, vision and sense of mission will determine your level of contribution.” When other element that Markham talks about is not only conforming to those test score but to also insure we are contributing to the global vision of our students future. One of the biggest differences between our past and our student’s future is that that world is becoming more assessable. Students need to be aware of that and know how to accept others. Markham then goes into talking about redefining what smart means and looks like. It inst always a college degree and test scores. He states that “Smart” is, “grit, resiliency, empathy, curiosity, openness, creativity, and evaluative thinking.” We are stuck in a society that calls for good test scores to be smart. Most of these test score don’t test for anything besides knowing the material. I hope with the future of our education system we can help show students that they can be “smart” in many different ways. We as educators should always try to future our experience and continue our education to become effective with our mission to teach. Markham state that one way we can do this is by collaborating reality. Joining a sit like Twitter we are able to join a community of educator that can contribute to our personal learning.
