Ch. 4 Learning in the Collective
Quote: “Communities derive their strength from creating a sense of belonging, while collectives derive theirs from participation.”(604)
I think this quote best describes this chapter because it makes the distinction from communities and collectives.
Question: What can we do to help students feel comfortable enough to be a part of the collective?
Connection: As educators we should be trying to have students fell a part of our classroom community. I feel now that we should also be trying to get the students to a point where they can contribute as a collective within their community.
Epiphany/Aha: My Aha moment was thinking about how much the student could learn from each other in their collective groups.
Ch.5 The personal with the collective.
Quote: “The connection between the personal and collective is a key ingredient in lifelong learning.” (943) I picked this because I feel it explains the chapter well. It shows the importance of including the collective with the personal.
Question: If I don’t have technology in my classroom, what is the best way to get students to be a part of the collective?
Connection: During my first clinical practice I was able to have a project that allowed student to learn collectively then teach their skill independently. I feel it went well.
Epiphany/Aha: My “aha” moment was when seeing how the online bank was able to use modern technology to be able to reach so many small businesses. If only we can find a way to implement that type of learning and experience in our schools.
Ch. 6 We Know More Than We Can Say
Quote: “From that one experience, a finger touching a flame, a person learns countless things.” (1038) I think this was an important part because it shows and summarizes the chapter well. It shows all the information we learn from one experience.
Question: What kind of authentic assessment can we give to see how much our students know?
Connection: I haven’t had the chance to try inquiry based learning in my classroom but I do have an interest to do so. I feel that this could have a place in physical education maybe allowing student practice a game in different ways and come up with the best methods to do something.
Epiphany/Aha: While reading the Inquiry section I had the “aha” moment I really feel that I could create an awesome unit based on inquiry learning even in my PE space.
